Norio Azuma is known for his minimalist yet texturally rich ceramic art. The vase is spherical with a narrow opening at the top, and it features a tactile surface design that is characteristic of Azuma’s work. The surface is decorated with undulating, wave-like patterns that flow horizontally around the body of the vase. These patterns are both raised and incised, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow.
The coloration is subdued and earthy, with a stone-like finish in shades of gray and dark charcoal. The texture gives the impression of natural erosion or sediment layers, which aligns with Azuma’s often organic, nature-inspired aesthetic.
This kind of vessel would typically be both a sculptural and functional object, likely intended more for contemplation and display than for everyday use. The restrained palette and flowing design exemplify the Japanese-influenced modernist sensibility that Azuma often employed in his work.
