Sutter Antiques is, at its heart, a study in time—how objects travel, how taste endures, and how a place shapes the way we live with beauty.

Founded in 1973 by Swiss-born antiques dealer Alfons Sutter, the gallery began far from the Hudson Valley, at London’s storied King’s Road Market. From the beginning, Alfons was guided by an instinctive eye for form, quality, and the quietly unexpected. That sensibility followed him to New York City in the mid-1970s, where Sutter Antiques took root in the Flatiron District and became known for its refined selection of Oriental furniture and objects.

Weekends were spent on the road—driving the Hudson River Valley with longtime collaborator Frank Rosa, stopping wherever instinct suggested something worth discovering might be waiting. Over time, those journeys led to something more permanent.

In 1990, drawn by the landscape and the pace of life, Alfons and Frank relocated to Hudson. By 1995, a second space—20th Century Gallery—opened nearby, dedicated to mid-century modern art and furniture. The two galleries eventually merged in 2007, unified by a shared philosophy and an ever-expanding vision, under the single name Sutter Antiques.

The collection today reflects decades of looking closely. Biedermeier, Empire, and Art Deco pieces sit comfortably alongside mid-20th-century furniture, lighting, and decorative objects—each chosen for its presence, proportion, and ability to live well in contemporary interiors. The inventory is constantly evolving, shaped by curiosity rather than trend.

In the fall of 2025, Sutter Antiques marked 30 years at its current Hudson location, a milestone that parallels the city’s own transformation. Once a quiet river town, Hudson has grown into a vibrant community of artists, designers, restaurateurs, bakers, clothiers, and makers—each contributing to a place that feels both historic and alive. Remaining part of that evolution is something we don’t take lightly.

Perhaps the most meaningful measure of time, however, is not counted in years but in relationships. Many of today’s clients first visited the gallery as children, trailing behind parents and grandparents. Now grown, they return with homes of their own, forming second and third generations of collectors. It’s a continuity that feels rare—and deeply affirming.

Sutter Antiques continues to serve designers, architects, and private clients who value objects with history, character, and intention. The story is still unfolding, one piece at a time.
